Today we arrived bright and early on site at 9:00am, Anthony introduced us to Benji, who is going to be our building supervisor. Benji showed his depth of knowledge right away when he suggested a way of constructing our foundations for the chess board which would not require shuttering. His method was not only easier to implement, it was also a lot faster than the way we had intended to use. By 11:00am we were well into digging our foundations and with the help of the volunteers we were making good progress. By the end of the day our bodies ached and our hands were sore, but we had already dug half the depth of our foundation trench.
We also got to meet the representatives of UFG Ulm, our sponsors, and they seemed to like our intervention. Later on when we had called it a day, we had a braai at Stan’s near the Beer Hall, it was quite nice because it was the first time we had interacted with the Beer Hall team and their volunteers in a while and like us they had recruited more volunteers. After the braai, everybody gathered in a circle and we all introduced ourselves and said something about the projects. I thought this was the perfect way to end the day with everybody together watching the sun set, with the Beer Hall in the distance.
