I met with Catherine and Khula this morning outside the workshop at Wits. Our task for today is to try and get the steel balustrade bolted to the concrete structure. We began loading my trailer with the heavy C-sections at about 07h30 and then took made our way on the long trip to site in KwaThema.
After lots of advice from Peter Kesley we formulated a plan for getting the steel C-sections fixed to the structure in the minimum amount of time- this process involved drilling one hole into the concrete beam and then hammering a rawl bolt into the concrete. We then placed on of the pre-drilled C-sections onto the bolt and lined up the next hole according to how the C-section was pre-drilled in the workshop. The next hole was then drilled and another bolt was hammered into place- all we had to do now was place the C-section over the steel bolts and fix them with the nuts provided. The job was very exciting and it was great to finally see our design start to become a reality. This excitement didn’t last too long though as there were 42 pieces of steel to install- I had great help though- Khula, Lawrence and Wandile were fantastic!
Overall I had a great time today even though it was at times very tiring. Khula, Lawrence, Wandile and myself were talking rubbish and joking the whole time which made time really fly. It was great getting to know the guys a little more.
