Friday 17 May-Steel Shopping Galore
Today Kasia and I got to Kwathema at around 9:30-Kasia had a meeting with the old-timer brick layers and I had to dash off to Highlands to meet with Phillip. Phillip and I promptly left on a steel finding mission around the greater Ekhuruleni area-visiting 3 steel merchants for quotes on the Corner shop structure. The first was Steel and Pipe just outside Kwathema-surprisingly full of staunch angry-looking Afrikaans men. The next was CJJ steel in Springs-The journey through Springs was fascinating-their modernist town hall is very cool-with a 10m+ cantilevering entrance portico. CJJ was run by unfriendly portuguese but actually gave quite a good quote. The final merchant was Erco steel, also in Springs whose salesman informed us that we were 'taking food out of his children's mouths' with the amazing quote he was giving us. This quote turned out to be 50% more expensive than the other 2-and after we emotionally told him all about the project-what a schmuck. We decided on the Afrikaners from Steel and Pipe because they stocked everything we need, are close to the site and deliver free. I had to unfortunately pay for the steel using my student loan account due to the fact that the the project budget has run out-hope we can find some sponsorship...Steel should arrive in Kwathema tomorrow at 2-cant wait
