The passion is so evident at the chess park, even in the bitterly cold weather, the kids are playing hard and the volunteers working away at the chess board.
Sometimes I forget what it is all about, I get so absorbed with the making of this chess board and the logistics of it.
The board, rising just a few centimeters off the ground is a symbol of something very big in this community... It is of sharing, participation, commitment, reliance, acceptance, togetherness...
It is potent. It is a neighbourhood... and it is wonderful to be a part of it, even if it's only temporary.
Driving home today, I realized that the last few weeks spent in Kwathema, has created a shift in the way I percieve reality...I have had to adapt myself to the world of kwathema..... adapt to living in a neighbourhood...My pretentions are falling away, as here there is no space nor tolerance for them. I think people can see right through me... It is wonderful and frightening at the same time.
There is a lot of intuition at work.... When Tom designed Ma Shobas corner shop, he based the size of the slab on the existing timber structure. After we had laid out the tiles for the chessboard, there were a few left. Those few fit absolutely perfectly onto the slab of the corner shop....I was amazed... Proportionally it is perfect relative to the board...
